May. 10th, 2003 08:50 amalright. after getting to bed at like 2:30, i was awoken by my mother's yelling at 6:45...i was already having trouble getting back to sleep, and my mom burts in to my room to give me my mail...then a bunch of my parents' loud friends came over (i think my dad was taking them to the airport), i was crying i was so tired and couldn't sleep. then, final straw, construction people showed up next door, and are doing something with chemicals that smells horrific. so. on 4 solid hours of sleep, i try to begin this paper...and what do i see in my notes on it? It has to be "consistent and unified". Now. How the HELL do i do this when my point is my theory is neither consistent nor unified. that is WHAT my theory is. It changes for the text. oh good. i am so screwed. i was really feeling good about this last night, now i don't even know where to begin...again.
Hollie, if you see this soon. HELP!

I offer a position that exists outside this binary [formalism and historicism], one that does not choose sides, but instead sees formalism and the various modes of historicism (including reader response and cultural studies) on a continuum, and places each text on a different place in this continuum based on the qualities of the work itself. That is, one needs to gauge the level of relativism of extra textual information for each text and analyze that text accordingly. Thus the method of critique will be different for each text, and each text may be read in different ways by different people, based on their unique judgment of where the text belongs on the continuum.

how's that for pretencious?

Date: 2003-05-10 08:46 pm (UTC)see, my paper's really kinda weird...i'm just making a claim that a person can never write anything original (using kant's noumenal thing, coleridge, and horkheimer and adorno's cultural industry and how it's influencing everything we produce). guh. i dunno. we'll see if it works. i'm at your point of not caring also. i'm like JUST TAKE IT! I'M DONE WITH THEORY AFTER THIS LAST ESSAY, SO TAKE IT!
