Hurray for Torch-y-wood!
Jan. 23rd, 2008 03:53 pmYes. Phew. I breathe relief and squee all at once. This episode was so so so much better than the series premier. Jeebus I feel better about this show, now.
Ok, so,
This is going to be random, I suppose. But if you read my post(s) last week on Torchwood, you know I wasn't uber-impressed and I wasn't expecting much from future episodes. I'm happy to report I was wrong. Tentatively. So far. Because I really liked "Sleeper." It had everything that was good about S1 and some notable improvements, specifically, the camaraderie between the crew. Awesome. Almost every moment.
It had laugh out loud funny at least once (Owen: Lets all have sex. FTW!!!), and it maybe more. A couple Ianto jokes fell a little flat (trying a bit too hard there), but for the most part I squeed. One funny bit was garbled...when Beth was looking at something in the hub and Ianto told her not to stare at it or something. I expect that was funny. The Gwen/Ianto comments on Jack's manners in bed, was fabulous.
The balance between funny and 'this could be the end of the world, take it seriously' was brilliant. It was all mixed together, seamlessly. And when the Jack yelling seemed a bit ridiculous and over the top? They acknowledged that it was, and that it was just for show. Instead of just letting it stand as unbelievable. And, Ianto's "I know everything," omg, so precious. *smooshes him* Oh, and holding out an arm to Gwen too. Awwwwww. Yeah, should Rhys pass away? You could maybe sell me on a Jack/Ianto/Gwen sammich. Or Jack/Gwen/Ianto, for that matter. Or--well, you get the point. Hell, you could probably sell me on Tosh/Owen/Ianto after this ep. Who many fics like that are going to pop up, I wonder?
I found the actress who played Beth incredibly annoying. I rather wish they would have used someone who garnered more sympathy. It didn't detract TOO much, but I found I could not feel bad for her at all. Eh, oh well. I major flaw of the episode, i think actually, but relatively minor, in the midst of so much renewed squee.
I really liked The Serious Look to Gwen in the car after Jack assures the team everything is going to be ok because he's the dashing hero. I LOVE little moments like these. MORE!
I wish the last scene with Jack/Gwen would have lasted a little longer before he sent her home. I really want more more more interaction between these two. It's the emotional heart of the show.
Creepy sleeper agent who wanted to get the world blowed up with his "they're already here."... nice setup for a season arc, it seems like. I liked that it wasn't completely tidy. And how the team didn't even know exactly what to do with Beth.

All in all, MUCH better than last week which was all, "Hi, lookame, I'm shiny and new!" This week was all, "'Sup" with a stoic nod and a flap of the coat. If the rest of the episodes meet or exceed this caliber, I will be a happy fangirl.
