a little late to the party, but...
Apr. 1st, 2007 09:36 pmdude. i'm gone for the majority of a weekend and i'm at skip60 for
time_and_chips. relax fandom! nah, don't. it's ok. i'll have a bit of time to catch up. hopefully.
now then. spoilers follow, obviously.
general thoughts:
as seems to be general consensus... i like Martha. i mean, i wouldn't have her over Rose, but she's definitely interesting. She's smart and she's got spunk, i s'pose. she's supercute. And she has the requisite touch of weariness with everyday life (at least post experiencing something otherworldly) that companions need. I'm not so sure about the chemistry yet, though. I guess it's all a bit new. And the glances and the winks and raised eyebrows and mostly pointless kissing and whatnot seem too outspokenly flirty to be quite in character. whereas the condemnation of Martha's outright saddling up to him at the end seemed a bit more genuine.
the plot:
jidun (sp?) platoon on the moon? wtf? all a bit hokey. but means to an end, i guess. tho props on creepy monster in the form of feeble old lady. what was she, plasmavore? but why did she want to fry earth? ??? honestly i was a bit too focused on the Martha/Doctor dynamic to pay much attention to plot, but it was neat how right away she was helping him figure things out. the grabbing the manual thing in the xray room was pretty cool. i like that the previous alien experiences on earth aren't being ignored. yeah they had to deal with Martha's "cousin" but it made for good emotional resonance, that terrace scene.
what's up with the Doctor:
being a bit odd, no? why was he just hanging out around London, just passing through? i mean, i suppose that doesn't matter, but for someone who is still grieving? i dunno, i suppose people will try to fill this little plot whole with all sorts things. what was he doing there? anyway, he'd checked himself into the hospital, with severe pain, and had been there overnight, and no one's figured out he's an alien yet? Martha was the first one to listen to his heart? ok, so that could be in my plot comments, but my point is, that's a risky move on his part. so was getting captured by the plasmavore. he was obviously intending to, for the purpose it served, so the jidun would recognize her for who she was. was he intending to die? doesn't seem like it. but then what? was he hoping they'd come in before she'd taken too much? did he think it wouldn't affect him? are there things i don't know about the blood of Time Lords and how much they can lose? So, did he want to die? i tend to think not, but it was also a more than normal risky move, i think. Also, cheap tricks? bad, bad, Doctor. there are other ways to prove his Police Box is a time machine that don't take such chances. Tho, yay for the brown suit (and how hot he looked in that first street scene. be still my heart). i knew it wasn't forgotten, but it was still nice to see. Would have liked to see a reason he chose the blue, tho.
he wants to be on his own? how long between this and The Runaway Bride, in his timeline, i wonder. He seems very taken by Martha's 'would make a good companion' qualities, yet he's only taking her for one trip. i'm wondering how she ends up signing up. i don't wanna be spoiled. i wonder if she asks. hmm. still, i guess i find it a little strange that he really does want to be alone now. i'm glad he mentioned Rose, but i've about had it with RTD throwing us 'well maybe they were's. "We were together"? sheesh. yes, shipper hearts exploded in morose squee at that line, but damn its ambiguity!
uh. that's all i can think of right now. but i'm very tired. maybe more during the week. is it saturday yet?
