Torchwood 02X12
Mar. 21st, 2008 07:28 pmHow odd that I just wrote a TW review yesterday. Wacky BBC.
Ok, I have perhaps not ruminated on this enough. It's only been about an hour since I finished watching. I did love this episode besides some major flaws. It was probably the best of the series. Especially since I've forgotten all the good episodes that I squeed over early in the series. This one I don't expect I'll be forgetting about any time soon.
Without further Ado,
I'll start simple.
Best thing about this episode: Ianto in jeans and studded belt.
Worst thing about this episode: The last three minutes.
I care this much about whatshisface. JM's character. And if he doesn't have a DAMN good reason to be fucking with Jack this is a plot point of RIDICULOUSLY MAJOR FAIL. I'm giving it the benefit of the doubt for now. I just really hope it pays off. Because if it's just because his feelings are hurt? LAME.
Alright, other things... I loved loved loved all the flashbacking. I really wish they'd split this into a two-parter on its own. I'd loved to have seen more with each of their stories. I'd loved to have seen a nod somehow to Dr. Sato of DW S1, for example. I'd liked to have cared more when Owen's wife died. I'd love to see Ianto being even more persistent, or maybe see him picking out the suit.
There were probably a lot of logistical flaws in the ep. They didn't bother me SO much. Jack was a field op for a hundred years and he didn't get anything like control until 1999? What was he doing that whole time? Was he even trying to change things? I'd love to know more about Alex, why he went crazy. Maybe even a snapshot of the lives of the dead teammates. See them hanging out just for a few minutes... see Jack part of a team where he wasn't in charge and wasn't rogue.
Does Torchwood make you go gay? Is that the moral of the story? I'd really like to know. Is it something with the rift? Is it Jack and his fancy futuristic pheromones just bathing everyone around him in Teh Gay? Because meanie torturing Torchwood chicks from back in the day were all up in each other's grill, and Ianto, pre deathdeath of his gf was already up in Jack's. Also lulz to Jack's turn of the century sideburns. HA HA HA!
LOVED all the Doctor business in the beginning. But I wonder, did he think it would be a future Doctor coming to the PAST? Or would he have made do with any Doctor. I suppose it would have to be Nine or later, though, since only since then was the Doctor aware of the Rift's fuel potential. Still, why would Jack assume the Doctor would arrive any time before 2005? I mean, it would stand to reason that it wouldn't be until after that, right?
Some more head scracthers:
-OMGWTF!UNIT???? I'm not up on old school canon, but from what I know, UNIT are the good guys, yeah? So maybe they thought Tosh was in with those evil people, fine. They'd at least investigate enough to know she was coerced. And forever locked away without recourse? That's not the actions of good guys.
-Any reason Gwen and/or Rhys wouldn't have called professional rescuers? This bit bothered me a little bit.
-As did the detail of stealing their cars? Wha?
-And Owen was a pretty young doctor, no? Although they do that in the UK, right? Could he be a doctor by 23? Also, Ianto, born in 1983? Seemed a wee bit far fetched to me. But I just looked it up. And GDL was born in 1981. So not all that bad. But it makes me feel DAMN OLD. I just assumed he was a few years older than me instead of three years younger. *cries into beer*
But more good things...
Ianto in jeans and studded belt. Oh, I said that already, didn't I. ;) I just loved the overall concept. How they all came to be where they are. How it was tragedy, every time (and how gross was brain alien, btw?). Though interestingly enough, not for Gwen. How they ARE really a team and genuinely care about each other. Consider this episode in comparison with "From Out of the Rain," which wasn't ABOUT the crew at ALL. Except for a little bit of emo Ianto. And speaking of emo Ianto, WELL PLAYED this week. No blubbering, and the tears, when they happened were absolutely appropriate. I'll say it again, I want a Ianto plushy doll. To hug and love.
Anyway. I realize this review has had probably more cons than pros, but i really did like this episode a lot. I was actually rapt this time. I was into it. This is a good thing. I haven't seen the trailer for the finale (¡No espoilers por favor!) and while the end of this episode has me really pretty wary, i'm still excited for it. Bring it on. Then bring on the DW, before I flail myself to an untimely fangirly death.

Date: 2008-03-23 04:30 am (UTC)You don't go to uni until you're 18 (some go earlier if ultra intelligent but there are no such exceptions for medicine because of health and safety laws). Med courses used to be 6 years but the more "modern" ones are 5 years. Only a lot of people say they're practically really 4 years as you would spend the 5th year on placements in hopsitals anyway. But in which case, Owen would only be a junior doc and would literally just have qualified..
