Torchwood 02X09
Mar. 5th, 2008 05:14 pmOh Torchwood. *pets* I liked this episode. I didn't love it. It was a lot less cracky than I expected. But quality-wise? On par with a S1 so/so. Maybe a little better. Points for a bit of character development, a bit of a surprise at the end, but the logistical hiccups dragged it down a fair bit. I think I've just gotten past expecting more from this show.
I might have made it to this ep unspoiled, but I did hear about the Gwen!preg thing a while back. As it occurred so early, not really bothered. Anyway, what's important in this ep? Gwen/Rhys and Gwen/Jack, right? I realize that my opinion is probably unpopular, but I am FOR both ships. And I don't think Gwen is the whoriest whore to ever whore either. Jack's protecting her was well done. Up to and including disrupting her wedding. Her life was in danger. I don't think it was motivated by jealousy at all. He clearly IS jealous of Rhys. Very. And Gwen loves him. Jack, that is. It's destined to be unresolved, I think. Although, with them being more blatant about it this season... who knows?
I loved all the little moments we got between the two of them. Including the end with the dance. Just... awww. If it was anywhere other than Gwen's wedding to someone else, I might have thought they were going to make out. That's what I love about the pair. They work the chemistry and tension, but they are both too aware, and dare I say, respectful of everything/one else to give in to what they want.
That said... I totally knew that the alien!Jack was not Jack, straight away. I was praying I was wrong just because it was SO freakin obvious. Even Gwen should have known. And how did the alien know what was between them anyway? Lucky guess? Still, it did give us a little insight into Gwen. We know she knows that he loves her.
Erm. I can't remember all the problems I had with this ep as far as logic. Lemme see. Oh, the Tosh/Banana Boat(?) thing seemed really unnecessary. The dead DJ? Can't retcon that. And why did mama!alien have to go down on him before eating him? That was just needlessly crass. Gwen demanding to go on with the wedding? I don't buy it. She'd want everything to be perfect. Why couldn't they alien scalpel the eggbaby out of Gwen right away? Or at least do whatever it is Owen wanted to do in the first place with the big machine. Why did the alien resume the shape of mama Williams and not that of the pretty black dress lady at the end, in the barn?
And really pregnant Gwen in a barn? Jack with the totally unnecessary baby Jesus comment early on? Wtf?
Retconning the whole wedding? Um... can they create memories now? Has this become MIB? Otherwise, there's a lot of splaining to do. Not to mention, DEAD DJ!
I'm sure there were more things of that nature. This episode just wasn't... tight. However, I think they handled the emotional center of the episode pretty well. I don't really understand what the deal is with Zombie Owen... are they really just going to keep him like that? Seems silly. I liked the bits we got of Tosh/Owen. And I liked Tosh being badass, despite the stupid alien web thing.
But with only 4 episodes left now? I was kinda hoping for a much stronger episode. Wasn't TKKS ep 8 of S1? Last week was weak, this marginally better. I've been saying this for a couple weeks now, but I want the end of the season to kick ass. Right now, though, I'm expecting more of a gentle nudge of ass. Maybe.
Oh wait, The Jack Wedding Photo Thing. Any guesses on time period? Looked to be circa 1920's? A little later/earlier? Nice reveal there. And character implications. Does he love Gwen more for her or more for what she represents (normal, everyday strong love)?

Date: 2008-03-10 12:08 pm (UTC)Yes, but Something Borrowed is ep 9, and it was a heck of a lot better than ep 9 of S1 - Random Shoes.
Regarding the photo, I would have put it earlier than 1900's, which brings the question, did Jack get married before or after he realized he was immortal?
