question about spoilers.
Feb. 6th, 2008 10:30 pmI do not watch the trailers at the end of episodes for what's coming up next week. Is it unreasonable to expect that stuff to be kept behind extra spoiler cuts until the episode airs? I know I'm very sensitive to spoilers, more than most, but I still consider the stuff in trailers spoilery! That's why I don't watch it. I can't be the only one. Can I?
I don't know what to do. I don't want to live in a box. I like fandom, I like reading people's reviews and discussing things. But I don't want to know about next week until next week! Or stuff about later in the season, or casting spoilers or ANYthing.
Of course I'm thinking about TW now, having stumbled across something I didn't want to know. But it will be an even bigger issue when DW starts.
I just HATE the feeling I get when I come across spoilers. It's like a punch in the gut. Is it worth not participating at all, though?

Date: 2008-02-07 06:47 am (UTC)Having said that, I know that I've seen some of the show trailers well after the fact (especially for Who Series 2) and been astonished at how much they give away of the following week's show.
Have you considered just waiting a week to pop in to anyone's posts about a given ep?

No. It's kinda not fun if it's not timely or if other stuff has already happened...

Yeah, this is why I avoid them. These shows, DW and TW in particular give away SO much in the trailers. For most shows I watch weekly, I don't mind watching the next-week-ons, but for these I'm extra sensitive. We only get 13 episodes! I want each one to be totally fresh. I WISH i were spared some things I already know...

Date: 2008-02-07 07:11 am (UTC)Now that I know there are some people who are sensitive to such things, I'll try to remember to put them in white text after a warning (since you can't cut and then cut again).

Date: 2008-02-07 07:00 am (UTC)Yeah, I know. And I know I'm probably the only super-sensitive person that doesn't watch the trailers...
I was talking more in general (i'm getting more and more nervous as the start of DW airs), but yeah, I did have to avert my eyes as soon as I realized you were discussing something that didn't happen in the ep.
But no worries, I'm not tossing around blame; I know this is a ME thing.
I was just curious if I'm the only one this sensitive. I reckon on my flist at least, i am.

Where are you at (episode-wise) with DW and Torcwhood right now? There is some commentary on my last entry called "Still pinching myself" that you may want to avoid depending on how far along you are with Torchwood.
*hugs*

Date: 2008-02-18 01:46 am (UTC)and i do whatever it takes to avoid them. even if in some cases it means not participating in fandom. like going offline before the release of a HP book. i mean, it was necessary. spoilers were everywhere, people put them in their msn names, disaster.
i don't watch the next week trailer cause it gives away too much.
i love to read people's reviews but only after i've seen an ep.
and people when they talk about the trailer, they usually put it at the end so it's easily avoidable.
and i don't check my filter for the fandom until i've seen the eps. thank God for filters, idk what i'd do without them,
in march, before DW it's gonna be hard
last year i still got spoiled, cause people can't be arsed to do a frakking cut!
i've ranted about it in my journal many times.
i saw a photo someone had posted of the Doctor and martha's kiss. i hadn't even seen the trailers and someone posted that.
of course i commented saying what a twat they were but it was too late.
and i also dont visit ffnet cause it's the best way to get spoiled. i learned of boone's death in lost, of vaughn's marriage in alias, etc.
why i do it? simple- i like not knowing. i like being shocked and surprised.
there are some unavoidable things.
like The Big Casting Spoiler for s4 of DW, but besides knowing that someone's coming back, i haven't learned any specifics.
like i did for 200 on sg1. i knew Jack would be back and that was it. didn't see trailer or commercials, didnt even check my google alerts. they can be spoilery as well.
a few general details are ok, but in general i'd rather not know.
i am a huge spoilerphobe. it's the one thing that really annoys me about fandom. that people are so careless about them, i have to go about of my way to avoid them.
i dont see the promo photos, i don't even know ep names. the less i know, the better.
i just saw the latest torchwood. i went away for a few days and even before i did i was seeing reactions all over my flist.
i just read them, and even though it's been a few days, it's still fun to see what they think. that's usually what i do after an ep, go back and read everyone else's posts.

Date: 2008-02-18 02:11 am (UTC)Yup, that happened to me too. And someone posted a picture of John Simm as the master, and I didn't know about that. VERY pissed off about that.
I'm not involved with fandom for any other shows right now but DW and the related shows, so for other shows, it's easy to avoid stuff. But I love my flist and most of them are very good about spoilers. I do NOT venture off flist for reviews anymore, and I definitely don't go off lj. And yeah, I definitely wait until after I've seen any ep before checking anyone's review.
