Torchwood 02X03
Jan. 30th, 2008 03:44 pmOk. Good episode. Didn't have me bouncing with squee like last week, but it was strong and consistent and only had ONE part that had me rolling my eyes with "whatever." And it was at the end of the episode where I could tolerate it in the midst of the emotion and excitement.
The part I mean is that psychic mind travel voodoo whatever they pulled out of their asses at the end. Erm. What? Can they contact anyone in time if they know exactly where they are? Did they need his blood? It irked me, but only for a bit.
Other than that, the only bad things I have to say about the ep was that the Tommy/Toshiko stuff seemed a little forced. Or rushed, at least. Her freakout with Jack was a bit odd too, but given the stakes, I was ok with it. Oh, and the flickering florescent lights when Gwen sees the 'ghost' that sees her was so damn horror movie cliche!
But besides that, really, quite good. I liked our little Gwen/Ianto scene a lot. I loved each Tosh/Owen scene. I think I can totally ship them, y'all. And i really loved the tiny bit of vulnerability we got to see in Jack, talking...in the vaguest terms, about the time he comes from. And admitting he loves people. Awwww. And then making out. Which makes everything better. And it was nice and hot without being over the top. They need to make out more.
Although, on that note... it really makes it seem that Ianto is sort of... providing a service for Jack. Oh, I don't mean that as cold as it sounds. But like, he knew Jack needed comforting. And so he offered it. I still don't see that ship as genuine fluffy love. They're still seeking comfort (and i think it does go both ways, or did at least) more than anything else. Does that make any sense?
And that moment of 'oh Ianto is still the tea boy' when Tommy asks for tea was funny as well. If a bit bittersweet. Do I need to trot out my Ianto needs a hug icon? Well, for consistencies sake, I'm glad the character is still complicated. If he was walking on snarky air every week, it'd get a bit old, wouldn't it?

All in all, solid stuff. Flaws I saw were relatively minor, and good job on moving characters forward. Nice wee glimpses into Jack's history, as well (though nothing, I suspect, we didn't already know). I rather enjoy Torchwood when it cuts down on the crack factor. Not saying I don't love humor, I just like when the show's not being ridiculous, a la the series premier.
Also, I spent half the ep going "Hey! I've been there!" :D
