so there have been several small earthquakes in and around the valley in the past coupla days...i wonder if it means anything. i mean, we've been in a LONG quiet stretch lately. the last decent sized eqk was in...oh it must have been 99 or something. it was way out in joshua tree or somewhere. like a 7 pointer, but in BFE so it did no harm... we used to have a largish wake you up in the middle of the night tremor at least like once a year. it irks me that its been so calm. in geology class last year, my prof seemed pretty convinced that the 'big one' WILL happen in the next 20 years, and likely this side of that stretch. 3 major point where it will happen, and all not SO close, but close enough given the projected size of the eqk (in the 8-9 range). But then, no one really knew that the faults in the valley were capable of produced 7 point eqks until 1994, so i reckon they still don't know all they can know about them (the valley faults). Now until 1994 no eqk's epicenter was anywhere near my house (it was about a mile away then). So we were sure it was the 'big one' that morning, since it was so much worse than anything we'd felt up till then. we were shocked it was called a 6.6. later it was upgraded to around 7 (there were all sorts of insurance issues and schemes aimed to keep it low). but anyway, the actual big one, even taking into account its distance (at the closest point it will be 40 miles away) WILL be much larger than what we felt then. if it's any indication of the damage the 94 eqk caused, my school is STILL rebuilding and it liquified and toppled a brand new parking structure there.

anyway, just musing. i wonder why they can't predict these things already. we KNOW they send out soem sort of energy prior to the event, animals and some people can sense them. for animals it can be as much as 24 hours prior. for ppl, much more immediate. within minutes, but still. I know i have NEVER been asleep prior to a major eqk despite the fact that they almost always occur in the wee hours of morning (and they've never figured out why). So you'd think they would somehow figure out how to call them.

i should be doing like actual work or something, but i've been lazy for the past few days...

tomorrow i must get stuff done. the gods have given me cesar chavez day off and i should not abuse the privelage...

i thought i felt some tremors at the open mic reading i was at friday night...but i was in Burbank...so it might have just been a large truck.

thursday night there was a small one in class. everyone kinda freaked for 2 seconds. it felt like it was going to get much bigger, but it didn't. so everyone not from the valley wanted to go home in case CSUN decided to fall down again.
