has anyone ever heard about a conflict between Norton Anti-Virus and Word? I knew there was a reason i didn't want this dang virus protection. I could NOT figure out why my Word wouldn't open. I tried reinstalling it, everything. Finally, i tried disabling the Norton (an idea i got when researching why my computer was taking ten freakin minutes to shut down [yes aNOTHER problem this computer has]) and the program opened straight away.

here's the weird thing. this problem only started a few days ago. maybe thursday or friday. it happened once, then i got it to open again after i restarted the computer. today, no matter how many times i restarted it, i couldn't get the program opened till i tried this.

so now what, i have to choose between antivirus and Word? i'm thinking a new version of one or the other or both might solve the problem. maybe just different version. my alma matter lets us download an older norton for free. i dunno. this just makes me peeved.

i wonder if it will shut down better with the antivirus disabled. i wonder if word will stop work once the norton comes back on (i set it only to disable itself for 5 minutes).

hmm. this makes me punchy.

UPDATE: disabling the stupid NAV plugin on Norton seems to make Word work ok. i dunno about the shut down. i'm ascared.

Norton sucks butt, especially the newer versions. Did I tell you about it blocking me from connecting to my wireless router? I completely uninstalled it and I am using Mcaffee instead. I don't know if it works better than Norton but it doesn't interfere so I am happy.

did you buy mcaffee? or did you have it somewhere?

how are you liking your new computer?

we use Norton on all our computers (this new one an XP with 06 Norton), and Word works fine...

it works ok now since i disabled the plugin. the one that checks each document for viruses when you open it.

its weird cuz it worked fine for like two weeks and then just stopped.

but i checked and it is indeed a common conflict.

still don't know about the shutdown thing.

ohhhh. that thing. yeah, we disabled that. we also disabled the automatic live updates.

well, i guess at least it's working. do you have a warranty, or would this be something they'd pass blame onto the program itself?

well the program came with the computer. like preinstalled on it. i have the standard one-year warranty dealie. i didn't get a service package or anything.

right now the superslow shutdown thing is more infuriating. i don't know if it has anything to do with Norton tho. its just a hunch. since it started happening around the same time as the Word thing.

Hmm, I hadn't heard about that (we use it at work with Word). I use Microsoft Antispyware and Ad-Aware at home.

its taken care of now. but i still can't figure out why it takes my computer about 10 minutes to shut down. i'll have to research it tomorrow.

i love that icon. tho i thin a lot of people might not know what it is.
