Torchwood 02X11
Mar. 20th, 2008 12:20 pmI'm late to the party with this one. Went out straight after watching it, and felt I needed to ruminate over it a bit.
Because I liked it, I really did. For the same reasons I DIDN'T like last week.
The emotional resonance was there, for a change. Jack's mysterious assholery had a good explanation. It was apparently Burn Gorman's week off? He had like A line in A scene? Whatevs.
This episode WAS lacking in humor, though. Had there been a bit more of that in it, it might have upped this ep from good to great. Still a vast improvement over last week, which at the mo' i can barely recall.
The scene were I'm sure zillions of fangirls screamed? Meh. While I'm glad we saw a bit of flesh on TW (when was the last time THAT happened, c'MON, show!) it was... odd. They didn't exactly look like they were enjoying themselves. Maybe it was the awkward Gwenus Interruptus, but they did not look like a pair that routinely shagged each other with enthusiasm. Eh, I dunno. I rewatched it again today to see if I was imagining things (for srs rsrch purposes of course), and I'm sticking with my earlier assessment. Not hot. What was hot was Ianto walking out of the office getting dressed. Yowza. I'm you know, hang me for being a bad fangirl or whatever, but JB is like the least hot leading guy EVAR. Even (especially) with his shirt undone. Wow. His chest is weird. But the offer for Gwen to join them was funny (and a little hot).
I really liked the Gwen/Rhys interaction, but I think at THIS point, Rhys could try to be a little more understanding. He's a smart dude, he knows what's up. Why would he be pushing Gwen into the kids thing right now? I suppose he doesn't (or didn't) fully get that TW isn't a job you can just leave or put on hold for a while.
Is TW poor? Why couldn't they appoint their super sekrit institution a little nicer. Couldn't they...i dunno... paint the walls???? If they can afford staff and all? Speaking of that place, i didn't quite buy what's her face. Jonah's mom. That she would just abandon her kid like that, even if he was a crazy screaming old. It's not his fault that he, what was it? Looked into a dying star? Whatevs. That part of the story was a bit week. But the Gwen/Andy stuff was really nice.
There were a few good Jack/Gwen moments. I think they could have pushed that envelope a little further, given how they've been working on it this series. Especially that little clifftop moment.
So overall, vast improvement, not as good as the good eps earlier in the series. But a bit of renewed hope for the last TWO. Eeep. And they're coming so soon! And then Doctor Who!!! Hurray!
