See, the thing that I love about good scifi isn't the scifi part of it. It's the people, the characters and their relationships. It's good acting and the compelling emotions that come with it.

That said, Torchwood, this series, has been very hit and miss. And ep 10, very much a miss, as far as that goes. It wasn't a bad ep, per se. But it felt very stand alone. So much so that it could have been an episode of a different show. Any show that deals with the strange and unusual. But for a couple tiny exceptions that seemed very thrown in. It felt almost more like a poorly conceived tie-in novel they tried to cram into canon than a proper episode.

Quesion 1: Why the hell was Ianto so emo this ep? I get that that's sort of what he does, but why more than everyone else? What made him so damned sad? I felt like we were missing something there.

Question 2: What was the point of the whole Jack as carni thing? I mean, it wasn't exactly a tantalizing glimpse into his past like the end of last week. It didn't advance the story, did it? It just seemed extraneous. And also, I saw that episode of Highlander he ripped off his act from.

Question 3: When Owen first went zombie, they were very reluctant to put him in harm's way. Now, knowing that "who's in that booth" or whatever Jack says is most likely Uber Creepy Corporeal Film Ghost dude, they send Owen to tackle him? But oh, how convenient, he doesn't have breath. You know what he does have? Moisture. And brain activity, and a soul or whatever. Film Ghost dude couldn't get a hold of that. Also, might have been more interesting to see what would happen if Jack was attacked in the same manner.

Water chick just seemed loopy for no reason. It wasn't scary, it was just odd. And homie's teeth were just gross. Not scary, but hard to look at.

Question 4: WTF was that sea in town thing about? Anyone else expect to see a very flooded Cardiff? Also seemed totally useless.

No mention of Rhys or Gwen's marriage, or anything about placing this ep in context. Not even a throwaway line about the honeymoon or something.

This ep was dangerously low on humor. The best eps of Torchwood have it in spades. The only thing I can even remember is Gwen's "is that what they're calling it," LAME joke. And Owen's "That's impossible," though I don't think that was meant to be funny.

The whole video killed the radio star aspect of this episode was... I dunno. Supposed to be more poignant, I think, than it was. We didn't feel the loss of a bygone era as keenly as we were meant to, possible. I mean, the bygone era being full of creepy people and all. Jack's emotions seemed inconsistent (big surprise) as well.

Gwen and Tosh were barely even in this episode, but Tosh's hair continues to bug me. Yes, I am a bit shallow. But when all she's doing is staring at a screen for the whole ep, it gets noticeable.

And finally, I don't understand why it was that only one 'breath' was saved. Making it sadder didn't help the episode. Though it might explain Ianto's tears or something. It just made me feel like it was a waste of their usual day-saving. They handled the bad guys but couldn't save the victims. Someone on my flist referenced The Idiots Lantern, in that the method of bad guy disposal was rather similar. But i think there's another comparison to be made, the sort of zombie people, barely alive. Hidden in a barn or in hospital beds. I wanted them to all come back to life. I wanted a happy ending. I wanted some smiles. Like in TIL. And sure, it's good when a show doesn't give you what you expect, but I can't figure out why they might have made the choice to make it so sad. That boy wasn't a ray of hope, his whole family's dead (i'm assuming, i think he was from the car?).

So yes, overall, more headscratching with this one. Less than last week, and yet, less enjoyable. Three more eps to wow me, guys. So far, I'm calling shenanigans on this series, and would just as soon not see Torchwood renewed. I really think it's just about irreparably jumped the shark.
