download managers?

karenordoes anyone use download managers? i'm having a helluva time with downloads lately. Things hang totally randomly. can be the middle, the end. seconds left on a huge file and NOTHING i can do can get it started again. and its not cuz my interent goes down, it doesn't. i can't figure out why its doing this all of a sudden. i hope its not virusy. sometimes they start back up on their own, but that's pretty rare. mostly i just have to redownload. and it doesn't even start from where it left off, but starts anew. and this is WITH the imbedded mozilla download manager. i try to pause and resume a few times to make it go, but that doesn't seem to do much.
a lot of times it happens when i step away from the computer for a while and then come back and touch something. but i can't really find a pattern to the fowlups. it's getting on my last nerve.
so. is there a download manager out there that you would recommend? one that is ad-free and hopefully free free. because i'm poor.
