Y the Eye of Harmony make zombies??????

Someone school me in general about the Eye of Harmony. I don't know much. And how come they could make a functioning TARDIS in "The Doctor's Wife" without one? Was her breath a reasonable facsimile?

And actually, this was the least of my issues with the ep (which admitedly had some awesome as well), but that in particular... just. Erg.

In old school, the Eye of Harmony was on Gallifrey and pretty much powered... Gallifrey. Wikipedia can fill you in pretty well. Then the TVM said it was a source of power onboard the TARDIS and all the fanboys wanked a bunch of stuff about how maybe it was just a link to the real Eye of Harmony or something. (But that was just one of the billion weird continuity error/inconsistency things left over from the TVM's million drafts, status as a total reboot at one point, and general awfulness.)

I guess the TARDIS needed a new source of power once the Rift closed, but why or how the Doctor would have a, or the, Eye of Harmony is really unexplained. There's nothing stating that a functional TARDIS has to have an exploding star somewhere inside. It has to be powered somehow, sure, but I assume that in The Doctor's Wife Idris could simply loan enough of her TARDISness to their makeshift thing to make it work for a while.

I have no idea why liquefying your cells and burning your skin off or whatever it was the Doctor said exposure would do to you makes you a lava zombie.

Ah. I remember that bit from the TVM now...

I suppose that sort of makes a little sense, to give things a bit of continuity.

But from this ep, I didn't get that it was so much a power source as a... necessary component for making it go. But I'd have to rewatch and I don't wanna. Because wtf engine go boom? WHAT EVEN WAS HAPPENING? AND WHY?

I lolled at the magnaclamp scene, though.
