here's the email i received from the graduate secretary waiting for the appropriate form to finish my file.

Hi Karen, unfortunately our department phones have been down due to
technical difficulties. This also means that our fax machine has been down,
and we have not received any faxes from Admissions and Records (so I am not
sure if they tried to fax it over or not). I will print out your
transcripts and do an unofficial evaluation, just so that I can let you know
where you might stand (you will then know if you should register, then you
can go ahead and register and we will finish up the paper work shortly). I
will need to contact Admissions and Records let them know that our fax is
not working and that they will need to send the 1295 forms through campus
mail. I will work on your application right now and email you in a half
hour to an hour. Thank you for your patience.

Arg! Of all the goddamn luck. of course nevermind if i will actually technically be able to register, just whether or not i should. this is so unfair, i hate when school stuff is so NOT black and white. how hard is it to confirm that i have enough units and that my gpa is high enough, goddammit?!?!?! i already know i qualify. erg.

you think it would be simpler to say this:

Hi Karen, I just finished evaluating your transcripts. It looks like you would come in to the English Department M.A. program as Conditionally Classified or as a Classified student (Both allow you in to the Engl. program). This would depend on your last 60 unit GPA. Your upper division English course GPA is 3.73 which would waive you from the GRE if your last 60 units was a 3.0. You have passed the Upper Division Writing Proficiency Exam, so this requirement has been met. This is an Unofficial Evaluation due to not having the 1295 form from Admissions and records, they evaluate your courses and let us know what your last 60 unit GPA would be. In order to be in the program your last 60 units must be a 2.5 or higher. In order to waive the GRE requirement (which would give you classified status) your last 60 units needs to be a 3.0 or higher and your upper division Engl. courses need to be a 3.6 or higher, you currently have a 3.73. Looking at your transcripts your last 60 units looks o.k., but I am not sure until the calculations are done by Admissions and Records and when Dr. Stanley, the Graduate Advisor has approved everything. I saw that you have a number of U's which eventually turn in to F's and may effect your GPA. This was during your first few semesters, so I am not sure if it will effect the GPA that we will be looking at (we look at your last 60 units). I looked at your last 60 units and did not see the U's in the last sixty units. I can not give you official status until I receive your 1295 form. I think that you will be o.k. You can go ahead and register for the courses so that you save a space for yourself, if things change you can always drop them. But I do not think you will have to. We should know your official status with in a few days.
