concert ramblings
Dec. 5th, 2002 07:41 amSo...I went to go see Toad the Wet Sprocket last night. First I went to this shindig for the people in the toadsback yahoo group, and that was kinda cool. met a bunch of new people (there was 30 of us), got to meet the girl i'm staying with in san jose, got my picture taken with a Toad gold record (Randy Gus, the drummer wanted one to go to the fans, so gave it to this very nice guy Steve Panhorst, and he and his wife Jeni travel with it all over the country and take pictures of it with different people, there's a website somewhere, i'll mention it again when my picture is up, if its a good shot) both solo and group, had pizza, schmoozed. It was neat. I even got a great parking spot right by the venue cuz i was there early...but the hotel where the party was at was a little schlep away, but whatever. Joe Lyons stopped by the room and handed out 4 backstage passes (four, for thirty people!) we drew names out of a hat into which we only put names of the people who haven't met the band before. i included my name cuz i've only met glen, but i didn't really care to win. i didn't so it all worked out. and it turned out they the passes were actually some sort of organized meet and greet. whatever it was, i didn't stay long enough to find out, as i had to jam home. and as for the concert....
it was seriously so awesome. i was in the second row (off in the corner so the sound blew, but the view was fantastic) Jon Brion and Nickel Creek opened. NC got a standing O, not bad for an opening act. They were really in top form. I've seen them a couple of times, and as a whole band (I usually see only the fiddler and the guitarist play with Glen Phillips, and the mandolin player is a spaz), they're not my favorite, but they were really good. They only played one song I don't like and their new album is riddled with songs i don't like, so it was a blessing. It was very emotional when Toad took the stage. They were so gracious, amazed they could sell out the Arlington Theatre after a five year break and for such a good cause, yadda yadda. Glen was nervous, he asked the audience to trade our happy excitement for his nervousness. i nearly cried more than once, and i'm really not that much of a goober. the setlist left a little to be desired, cuz it was all like 'favorites' singles and 'crowd pleasers' but that's forgiveable. They played one Lapdog (two former members formed a new band) song, and one Glen solo song which i thought was really cool, them not pretending like nothing happened in the meantime, and also NC came out and jammed a coupla times. There was one pseudo encore, cuz they never left stage...they announced the wouldn't cuz of time constraints. they were done by a quarter after 11 (they only played like an hour and 15) and i was home, thank god, by 12:30.
oh, and there was a buffy reference. They didn't talk much between songs, but they said before a song that it was the first song they ever wrote "for hire", for the Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie...which was of course, Little Heaven. ;)
Weeeee!
now, back to the real world, until december 10th, when my shows begin in earnest.
big sigh...
