Okay, final part. Um... Yeah, best to just go straight under the spoiler cut...
OMGWTFBBQSURPRISEBABY!!!!!!!!!!!! I was really, really happy with this part until the last five minutes. I know Dave is learning to be a great dad by like... cleaning or something, but I'm sorry, what man on the planet goes 'oh you got pregnant on the sly, YAY I LOVE YOU!!!!!!' and what the hell kind of woman does that? If all she wanted was a baby? Dude, she had a boyfriend. And she could have broken up with him and gone awol and still had a baby all to herself (not that that made much sense, but if that was her plan, she didn't need to shag Dave). That whole thing makes ABSOLUTELY NO SENSE. HOW DID IT HELP THE STORY??????? Did it just make it not your standard ending, a la rom-coms, where circumstances and big heads keep the true loves apart until the dude gets over himself and comes running right before she's gone forever. BECAUSE IF SO IT WAS RETARDED.
Okay. Off my chest now. If I ignore that one baby bit... I think think this episode might have been the best of the lot. Where none of the characters made me want to throttle them (except Tanya's mom, jeeeesus), where we finally saw everyone's reasonable reactions, where even Anna made sense and her and Robin were so damn cute. And Stuart didn't turn out to be an asshole, and THE KIDS WERE DAVE's and they got all that dumb drama out early. It was getting sorted, and all of those 'ooooh twists' in part 3 were done with quickly. Even the hotel bill was used to great effect with them being cute.
And honestly, after all the weeping done in these four parts, I cried for the first time watching this one. And I'm not that hard to make weepy. And it wasn't any of the times when Dave broke down, even. It was when Lucy said she was going to move in with Stuart (though I saw it coming that she wouldn't). His reaction was so... good. It's like, before he would have flown off the handle and tried to hold on tooth and nail to what was his, but he knew he had to let her make her own decisions even though it killed him. That showed character growth and whatnot. And I think maybe I kept crying when Tanya had her drunken melt down. It really showed that she really is just a kid. And maybe when he hugged her the next day too. And acknowledged that he was a shit father. I'd have Dave's kids, but THAT'S NOT THE POINT. THE BABY THING WAS STILL STUPID.
Sorry, where was I? The nits scene was kind of adorable. I mean when Evie first came up so excited and wanted to feed them. And Lucy's freaking out was so 15 year old girl. And even Dave's refusal to use Sarah's pesticide was well played. Every moment between them was. With all the tension, and the furtive glances, and the pretending and stuff. And Matt figuring it out was good too. And even him shagging Tanya made sense and was a dramatic twist that wasn't stupid. And I'm really glad Dave didn't go all grrrrr I'm gonna kill him for touching my baby girl because that would have been totally out of character. But it did open his eyes and was also a handy plot device for telling the kids. And I even liked that Anna was the one to get him to go find her.
And damn it I loved every bit of that last scene except the baby part. His persistence, her insistence, and her pointing out that they were too alike for it to work. And him saying Rita would want them to make it work. And even his line flub kept in because it sounded natural. That was all perfect, I just don't understand why they had to throw in the surprise baby. That makes Sarah seem like... I don't know what, but it was completely unnecessary. "I love babies"? I mean, I liked his confusion when she told him, but... GAH! And it colors why she was insisting on a paternity test before too, which I'd rather it not. Was she afraid he wasn't fertile or something? I mean, everyone knew he was Tanya's dad. I mean, I don't know. Seriously if that one bit was taken out this, episode was just about everything I wanted from the whole series. Which makes it even more frustrating.
And on the superficial side of things, I did get distracted by DT's pretty a few times in this one, whereas before I managed to mostly ignore it. And moreover, I decided Dave's clothes need a makeover. One of the times when he walked into the studio, I was like... oh, that doesn't look good. And it's not easy to make him not look good! But we got some hand!porn! which was nice. And um, I'm still a little bitter about lack of arse. But that's okay.
Overall, I enjoyed the 4-parter quite a bit. It was interesting, problematic enough to discuss, imperfect to be sure, and it only made me so mad when it was dumb (more than just the WTFBABYQ thing) because I was well-invested in these characters. And even for all their unrealistic decisions their writer-god had them make, the characters were very realistic and very well fleshed out, down to the minor ones (i'd have liked to see more of Beatie(?), maybe, though). And even the dog was used to great effect. And emeffing David Tennant. HOW AWESOME IS HE????????? Very. And the kids. All adorable. Even Lucy with her distracting braces. She's so damned cute and makes me cry with her big eyes. You could totally believe she's Dave's kid (even if not by blood) because she uses her eyes the same way.
Sigh. I'm sad this is over, actually. But mostly satisfied.
All right. Off to more Halloween festivities!
