Torchwood 02X04
Feb. 6th, 2008 04:29 pmEeeee! This was definitely a squee-worthy episode. I was unintentionally spoiled for some of the events, I think, by reading fic a while back (and it wasn't even TW fic!), so I sorta figured out what would happen (but I think I would have anyway), but I still LOVED this episode. Probably my favorite of the series so far.
So, without further ado
Y'all probably know what my squee is about. Gwen/Jack! *omgflail!!!* Yeah, they hit it quite a bit stronger this time, and I am QUITE okay with that. Because it's growing. I can already see people's diegwendie comments about how it has come out of nowhere and Jack's acting out of character and all. But it's been building since the beginning of the show, and I loved the little bits of hearkening back to the beginning they did. I loved Rhys's automatic assumption that they were fucking. Because duh, anyone could see there's something between them. You can even see it in Ianto's eyes. And I'm sure, now more than ever, that he's okay with it and NOT possessive of Jack in that way. I'm also sure, for as much as I'm a shipper that there ISn't anything physical actually happening between them. I'd previously been sure there wouldn't EVER be either, but this episode has me doubting that. As much as Gwen clearly loves Rhys.
And speaking of which, HOW fabulous was their fight?!?!? I was PRAYING that they wouldn't retcon him because I didn't want that fight to just be erased. I did think it was a little odd how Rhys found the concept of aliens a little difficult to believe, though, since he'd already seen the big space manatee. I also love how he handled himself with the meat guys and how he held his own in TW and with Jack.
Going back... Jack's face... at the end, telling Gwen to go home, and then watching her on the cctv. Omg. *more flailing* I love that you can't quite put your finger on what it is between them. He loves her, clearly. But is it her or what she represents? Is she more attractive because she's unavailable? Or because he knows that if he really wanted to he could have her, her happy home be damned? I love how convoluted this relationship is. As opposed to Jack/Ianto, which for the record, I also love, but find to be fairly simple and straightforward.
Ok, so as for the other pairing flittering about... Tosh/Owen. All right, they were being heavy handed with it this week. But here's why I'm okay with that: Because TOSH is being heavy handed with it. It's not just the show artificially pushing them at us, it's Tosh actively seeking something. It's cute. And a little painful. And I kind of love how clueless Owen is. And that he's not being a total bastard about it. I'm sorta wondering if he knows what's up and is deliberately being dense. Tosh finally working up the nerve to touch him at the end was really great, as well.
How awesome was it to see randomlyflirty!Jack, sexual innuendo and all? Really fucking awesome, that's how much. That's a lot of what I missed about Jack in the first series, when it was all heavy handed jokes. This was some nice real life interaction, totally extraneous to the plot. It's minor and almost overlookable, but I think that means that finally Jack is coming to terms with who he is... and I don't doubt that has a lot to do with the time spent with the Doctor and the year that never was.
That said, that alien meat comment was a bit... eh. Could see it coming a mile away.
So what didn't I like about this fabulous episode? Well... it was a bit gross. Though at least you have the characters continuously being grossed out as well. But the only thing to really sort of irk me was the compassion for space manatee. I mean, I GET it. I see where Jack is coming from, and I'm glad the team was at least a little bit surprised by his plan, because it was an odd choice... but when it came down to it, in the warehouse, it just felt... off. Owen too. I think maybe they didn't spend enough time establishing the creature's sentience. "It heard you" really means little... the cries of pain were something, but not really enough for me in this respect to justify Jack's reaction, let alone Owen's.
However, any shortfalls this episode may have had, and they were relatively very few, they were completely made up for by "This is quite homoerotic." Eeeeeeeeee! Oh, and Jack pressed up against Gwen at the warehouse near the beginning. Woah. And Ianto's "We could release a single"!!! And Myfanwy!!!! Hurray!

I may watch this one again, soon, and I rarely do that. Also, I need more TW icons. And here I thought I was kind of over this show. ;)
