aaaaawwwsome!
Apr. 7th, 2007 03:44 pmi've calmed down a bit. had a reflexive step back and have got the squee under managable control. but don't expect this to be exactly coherent.
ok so. obviously spoilers follow the cut, wherein i break my " and ! buttons.
Alright, the issue on everybody's mind. Was the Rose namechecking sweet and wonderful and shippy? or was it too much? it may have been (especially when i'm sure they won't keep it up) but well. i liked both of them. both instances seemed so right. even when he was totally sorta dissing Martha in the "bed scene" which i'm sure is to spawn a million icons. because he was so oblivious to it. and the fact that sharing a bed at all had to "mean something". which, of course, someone pointed out, means he must have shared many a bed with Rose even when they were "just companions". i like the fact that they're not forgetting he's in mourning. but i'm a bit of two minds over it. keeping it going throughout the season would be both in his character, and less interesting for the show. i mean, not that i want her forgotten, but this isn't a show that dwells in the touchy feely. especially if those feelies are the Doctor's. i LOVE to see him being emotional. Full of rage and sorrow and longing. We need as much of that as we can, it's a perfect contract to the manic glee with which he solves mysteries. but i know they won't have that too often. and it will be for Martha now.
still both that bit with "Rose would know" and "That name keeps me fighting" (omg CHEER!) were both so awesome, that i'd never want them not there. And they were perfect moments of emo/angst in a fairly lighthearted ep (for being pretty damn dark).
As for Martha. I'm fighting liking her. She's cute and feisty and knowledgeable and all that...but this episode seemed to hit it home that she isn't Rose, and that the Doctor doesn't really mean to keep her around. Yeah, WE know he will, but...something's not 100% there. i don't think the chemistry is quite working just now. but then, if it was, it would probably be too shippy for my comfort. then again, i suppose that's probably on purpose.
more random randoms:
1. why didn't they spend the night in the Tardis? i mean yeah, they wanted to be near the action and all, i guess, but they weren't actually expecting things to go bump in the night. i rather think the Doctor would send Martha in there to sleep. But then again, maybe he didn't want her to get to cozy, since he's not planning on keeping her. but it was a little bit, omg we need a "bed scene" here so we can be all teasy and show everyone how much the Doctor NOT!fancies her.
2. 57 academics! omgsqueeflail! i loved every single quote or reference thing. all the you can can't use thats, all the you should write thats. so so clever. Sycorax!!!! eeee! neckbrace! weee! Martha's sonnet!
3. Why didn't they get Martha up in Elizabethan dress? She could totally be arrested for walking around bareheaded and in trousers. or at least chided and stared at. sumptuary laws anyone? yeesh.
4. that young witch was pretty. she's someone from something, right?
5. i wish there was more explanation for the witchcraft/science thing. i think they pussied out of that a bit.
6. HP blah blah blah. i guess it would have worked better if i cared at all about that fandom. i've only read the first book (hated it). and i've seen the first two and fourth movies (that was the last one, right?) At least i knew enough to get the references. But I imagine some of ya'll were flailing. I was a little eyerolly myself.
omg. "that's one kind of magic that won't work on me" was totally hot even if he was talking about how not hot he was getting. just. guh. they could have added 10 seconds to that scene and i'd be alright with that.
glad they stuck with the brown suit. i still like it better than the blue. not that i resist change. or anything. and i'd still like an explanation.
oh, i guess i gave up on numbering. um. all in all, i think this was a very very well done episode. it had everything you need for an episode revolving around Shakespeare. The villains were creepy scary aliens, but they weren't totally random, they were witches. The pop culture stuff was awesome (both contemporary to 1599 and to today) The preceptiveness of Shakespeare was awesome too. he figured it all out at the end, who they were. He really was a genius and they showed that (not fooled by psychic paper either, awesome!), but he was imperfect as well. lecherous and arrogant, but still a decent guy at the end, and saved the world. yay!
damn that was good. i want to watch it again. fighting not to. where are all the pretties? i want to make icons. or at least nab somebody's witty quote icons. this was chalk full of them. where does chalk full come from, anyway?
ETA: not really spoilery, just an image in the background. The S.S. Rose? Is this going to be the Bad Wolf/Torchwood of S3? If so, what does it all mean??? I don't want to be spoiled or anything, and I know there's no reason for actual hope, but it still makes my shippy heart sore a bit.
