I threatened to do something like this, and I'm quite embarrassed to say I spent hours (many) on them. Because I suck at giving up stuff to make the icon fit in under the 40k limit. Once I finally figured it out, I couldn't decide which version I like better. Obviously the bigger text is easier to read, but with the smaller images, it looks best with the uniform black frame. I think. Whatever. Snag if you like (credit, please). I may try again later or with different images or text or what have you.

With the black border. Looks niceish on my black background:

Oh for godssake. I'm so retarded.

EDIT: fixed now. And even redid the text on the little ones so it's not so crappy. Alas it's a bit offcenter now, but I DON'T FUCKING CARE!!!!!!! *throws stuff*

I would suggest slowing down the timing on each panel. It won't make the size of the file any larger, and will make it easier for people to give each piece its due admiration.

Hmm. I actually felt it was too slow. I might give that a try in a bit.

Edit: I slowed them down. It DOES increase the file size. At least working with ImageReady. So they are of slightly less quality, but better for being slower, you're right.

If you'd like to send me your original layered Photoshop file, I can run it through Photoshop CS3 at work tomorrow. Especially given that you've gone with greyscale, I can't imagine why it wouldn't easily come in under 40KB.

Yeah, I don't know either. I guess I need to save the original files smaller? I use CS3, but I don't save the layered file (for animations, I do for most icons). I think i'm just not savy with the tricks of Image Ready (and is there a version packaged with CS3? because i'm still using the IR that came with PS 7.0).

Don't worry about it trying to figure it out. I think they're ok as is. Once I went grayscale and smaller, it cut down the size enough so that optimizing doesn't kill the quality too much.

If you have CS3, go to Windows>Animation. It's internal to the program now. When you want to save, File>Save for Web and Devices. You can then play with the settings from there.

Take it from me - always save your layered files. CS3 makes this much easier to handle nowadays. If you want to see an example (for instance, the file from whence this icon came), let me know.
