ok. i'm writing this before reading any reviews. and i'm only reading friend reviews, i think. so far i've resisted the temptation to poke my head into [livejournal.com profile] torch_wood. doesn't mean i don't wanna discuss. just spoilerscared. i may post a link in the review thread. may not. anyone who finds this randomly (i think i'm on that tw_watch thing) jump right in. well, with no spoilers beyond the "next time" clip. ;)

ok. lamest title ever? yes. lamest episode? no, not at all. in fact, a pretty decent episode. i enjoyed it. a million times better than what was it called? ep 5? the one with the evil fairies of doom? that one.

still, a bit of a let down. missing a LOT of the things that make this show great. included a lot of them too. but probably the best part of Torchwood is the interaction between our main cast. and this ep had almost none of that. a little interesting gwen/owen tension. a wee bit of jack having the random information of the week. but otherwise, all gwen and eugene.

but i liked gwen and eugene! i liked eugene even. i loved how he wasn't extremely upset by everyone talking shit about him. because he knew that's what people did, kinda. he assumed and accepted that he was a failure. he projected (no pun intended) a huge amount of emotion without being all emo. and i loved the bits where gwen "heard" him.

i really liked how memories sorta came back to him and we were discovering what happened at the same time as he and gwen were. and for an episode with very little point, and pretty much no relevence to the grand arc, i was pretty interested in what was going on.

wherein also lies my main complaint. this is episode 9 ya'll. let's review. Doctor Who, S1, episode 9 = The Empty Child. Doctor Who, S2, episode 9 = The Satan Pit. Now, i know we can't hold Torchwood up to the Doctor Who standard, but in those cases, we were given a Very Important Ep. And part ones of two-parters for that matter. Huge ramifications for the entire season and all future episodes (shippiness!), yadi yadi. i kinda figured ep 9 in a 13 ep season...it's probably like a law that it has to be good and important. i don't know. silly british tv. i knew it wasn't going to be huge, given the previews last week. At most we got a little bit more insight to Gwen's character.

Is this episode supposed to tell us she's especially receptive to the "otherworldy", or psychic or whatever? Cuz we already knew she cared more than the average bear. i liked owen's comment about the rest of them being human. not sure what we're supposed to take from it, though. except that Jack had to cut in on their bickering. interesting. also that gwen sorta had to hide what she was doing from them...hmm.

but point is, this episode, tho fairly solid and entertaining didn't pull out the big guns. i mean, the end was all oooh and supernatural (tho i rather liked that we saw it from his perspective and they didn't go all cgi). but i really wanted something bigger to happen at this point in the show. like say, something big to drop about Jack and his past (looks like we may get a little more insight here next week, 'bout bloody time too). something big with gwen/owen. something more about gwen's normal life getting messed with (where's Rhys been anyway). and hello, SOMETHING about jack/ianto? maybe? where's the love, torchwood? and why were Tosh in Ianto only in like one scene each. wtf? after last week, being so great, using the whole ensemble so effectively (plus adding suzie), i guess i just wanted more from this episode.

so it gets a big meh, from me. say...6 out of 10. 6.5? i didn't hate it. wished it would have been ep 4 or 5, maybe. or just instead of ep 5. that would have been good. probably better placement in the arc, as well.
