karenori heart glen phillips. i love his music and his brain, which are intimately linked. he is very smart. i'd say brilliant. he's also against the war, questions its legality, its necessity etc. which in general, makes me very mad as you all know. but when i went to see him play on thursday, what he said about it, i agreed with, and i clapped for. it was right before he played a song by Randy Newman called Political Science. This is a tongue in cheek song about turning the world into 'one big american town' by 'drop[ping] the big one'. The gist of what he said was that he thinks they're handling it right on the ground and he hopes its over soon. He got a big hearty applause in which i participated, and believe me i have my own little nonenthusiastic protest when he usually goes on his schpeels.
my mom has this friend. she's pretty prejudiced against several groups of ppl. one of which is arabs. you should hear her violently graphic tirades agaisnt the humane nature of this war. basically she thinks we should blast through and be done with it and be damned with worthless iraqi lives.
you'll be glad to know i don't feel that way. i deplore the death of innocents, despite what i may think about their religion and/or culture, and the majority of iraqi's are innocent. i am AMAZED at the extremely humane nature in which this war is being handled (by the coalition side, anyway). I actually think it's a bit excessive, and that the coalition is risking their own troops to reduce the number of iraqi casualties. but i applaud the effort.
supporting this war does not mean supporting the murder of innocents. it means insuring our protection, and yes protecting THEM. some have died, more will. it is unfortunate that anyone innocent has to.
but that is war. and it is WORTH it.
