Oct. 25th, 2004 01:24 pmi do believe i've figured out the problem with the dsl. now, i don't know if this is what has always been the problem. but this weekend it was out almost the whole time. i did the whole switch everything off, let it rest and turn it back on and that worked twice, but only for short times. today i did the connect the modem directly to the main computer dealy. and THAT didn't work. so i go aha, a line problem it is. but wait, there's more. i ran the usually completely useless SBC connectivity doctor or whatever. and it tells me to check the connection to the phone jack and see if the line has a dial tone. well i know it has a dial tone, but i check anyway. yes that's fine. then i contemplate if i want to go to the trouble of checking the jack, as it is behind tons of crap and furniture and whatnot. instead, i say, hey, what about the other end, where the line from the wall plugs in to the modem. and lo and behold, i fiddle with it a bit (the wire is a little frayed, well not frayed, but the actual wire is showing thru where the casing has come away from the plug) and miracle of miracles, the blinking light turns solid. yay! so i check it and yes my parents computer can go online. then the real test, hooking it back up to the router. i did and yay the light remained solid. but THEN i went into a little panic, because the router wasn't logging in. apparently if you leave it off for a long time, it forgets is little bastard dns numbers. it took some time but it finally logged back on.
so HOPEFULLY this is all resolved and the whole problem was a dumb loose wire.
THE END.
