however, my professor for my linguistics class lives in Simi Valley and will not attend class. the email i got (from his email address) states: Dr. Bartelt, who lives in burning Simi Valley, cannot make it to class tonight.

it doesn't say class is cancelled, does it? but i guess it is. in any case, i'm sure as hell not going.

i went up to the top of Reseda (the street i live off of, at the bottom of the hill..the top is the top of the hill) to look at the fire. in fact, i went twice. once in the morning and once like an hour ago. the fire is clear across the valley. it was still kinda over the hill in the morning, (outside the valley), but by 3 the smoke had like at least quadrupled and you could actually see fire on the hill on the other end (about 8-10 miles away). but its on this side of the hill now. i took some picturess with my dad's new p.o.s. digital camera, but they give you the idea.

a few to give you some pespective:

and this next one is from the front of my house (my house is the one the right):

crazy huh...

turns out my school actually did close around 5pm. I went and was all lookiloo. i went up to the top of reseda again with my dad (three times in one day) when it got dark. it was all mega smokey and we could see tiny bits of fire way across the valley. then i went and got my friend and we drove to the way north end of the valley to see the fire. it was coming really close to some homes. first we were just seeing a lot of red and pink glow in the sky then we found where you can actually see the flames. hordes of people are parking out on the streets there and standing out, and gawking...like its xmas or fourth of july. i know, i was out there too, but i had the good sense to stay in my car with the recirculated air on, so at least it was filtered. it was way chokey out there. and drivng was a trip. kinda like driving through fog but with particles flying at you from all over...ash falling like snow. at my friends house (she lives about mid-valley) everything was covered in ash. it was so weird. my eyes and throat are burning. this is no fun. and i'm one who can't sleep with my window closed...

i don't know if class is gonna happen tomorrow. but its my poetry class, so its no big deal. but i do still need to write a poem. maybe a fire poem...eh, i spose a lot of people will write about fire. i actually already have a poem about burning hills...

we don't get any live coverage of the san diego fires. isn't that strange? like all the newspeople are sticking around here. we get recap reports with interviews and maybe a little footage of some house blazing, but nothing live from that area.

it's been a strange day...
