Bored. Too hot to sleep. Meme gacked from [livejournal.com profile] nonelvis.

I currently have 73 works archived at the AO3 (84 if you count my kinky alter ego, but I don't know how to link to all pseuds so let's stick with kscribbles). Pick a number from 1 (the most recent) to 73* (the first thing I posted there), and I'll tell you three things I currently like about it.

*Because most of my Fright Night fic is first, the fics are not entirely in chronological order. My Who fic was added alphabetically. Until such time as archiving caught up with writing.

Number 41 is Dance (http://archiveofourown.org/works/507582). An old school (written in 2007, after all), Ten/Rose reunion fic. Things I like about it:

1) I miss this kind of reunion fic. The kind that assumed it would never happen, because it was back before even the S4 spoilers came out. The fic that was all hope, written because people's OTP was separated so emotionally and we were still trying to heal, and their will still infinite happy possibilities. Fic written without bashing any future characters or rewriting canon or making anything unrecognizably AU. This fic's theme is probably hope, I guess. A slightly painful, then giddy hope. Rose's hope that it's real, the Doctor's hope she still feels the same. It represents a time in fandom that is gone now (for better or worse, I could do without the shipwars), that was a special time for me.

2) I think that this fic has some things that separate it from others of the genre... Maybe? The fact that the reunion happens before Rose even knows it does. She's equal parts hopeful and skeptical and that's totally Rose. She can't believe it because it IS impossible. But part of her knows that impossible doesn't mean what most people think it does. ;). Also, the offer to stay there, in Pete's World. Not just whisk her away (I think that was fairly uncommon?). The Doctor acknowledges that time has passed, allows that Rose is a different person, and wants to do what she wants, this new Rose. Also acknowledging that he's a Time Lord. He literally has all the time in the world. For whatever mostly handwaved reason, the TARDIS will be fine in this world if never used, and he CAN stay, and it isn't all a rush and run back to the TARDIS. Plus, that part is left undetermined. Hah.

3) If I'm remembering correctly, a lot of people commented on this fic about how visual it was. How they could see every part clearly. Rereading it, I'm not entirely sure why, but I know that parts of it (the bit at the end in the bar) were at least partially written to preserve a memory of a very real place (a bar above a restaurant in Ireland... this would have been written shortly after the summer i spent there, by the year, I didn't check the exact date). And even given that, I didn't include any of what made that place particular, instead stuck with the generic. Which still worked for me, and apparently worked for others, because they saw what they wanted to. And speaking of visual, I like my device with the Blue Suit. Rose is convinced the man she's dancing with can't be the man she wants, because his suit sleeve is blue. Kids today, with their binge watching, they probably don't get how BIG a deal a different suit was (or really how big a deal Doomsday was in general. How can it have the same impact if you already know she came back in S4, and don't have to wait years for it?).

I think your #1 really nails it: there was *so much* post-"Doomsday" fic out there (and even I wrote one!), and quite a lot of it was happy and hopeful. I had only a vague memory of reading this story, and it was nice to read it again; it's very of its time, but I think that's a good thing.

OMG you replied so I can't fix the horrible typo in 1. THERE WERE still infinite possibilities. I was sleepy and sleep-deprived.

The flurry of post-Doomsday reunion fic was a bit like the flurry of Post-JE very confused shipper fic. And while both still exist, it's just not the same. If you ignore S4 now (as many youngins still do), I think you do both Rose's development and Handy's whole character a disservice. Back in the day, there was no wrong. Sky's the limit. Angst away or just have a fucking awesome hug for thousands of words. It was kind of a magical time. Strange how fic can be a sort of... fandom artifact that way. :)

Number 52 is Transition (http://archiveofourown.org/works/388282), a Fright Night fic, a missing scene, told from the pov of Amy. Things I like about it:

1) I like the throughline, of her changing. How the changes wrought are subtle, but that the change itself isn't totally conscious, she just feels more like her. She knows it's happening, but at every stage, it just is what IS. She is already a vampire, from the first line, she just doesn't know it. And i loved that concept that the movie offered, that the physical changes happened irrevocably, before the mental ones did. I think I played with it interestingly, and hopefully a little surprisingly.

2) This is rated mature for implied sexual acts and language, but content-wise, it's probably closer to teen. What I like s that even given that, I think it's pretty sexy. And that's from Amy's POV. Because SHE finds Jerry the vampire sexy, even when she's in fear for her life. I like how this is part of the theme too. She goes from fighting herself for her desires, to giving in to them, because she's a vampire, so why the fuck not. I tried to walk that line between danger and sex, and i think it worked out okay.

3) I think this is one of only two fics of mine for this movie (and one of very few in the tiny ass fandom) that don't include Peter or Charley. Obviously they were my faves. And it took me a while to write Amy at all. But she's so fun. And I'm glad I wrote a fic that was basically all her. She was a little bit sidelined in the film (though she must have more screentime than Peter Vincent). But as a character, there was much more to learn. Especially since she'd been and come back from being a vampire. I dunno, it was fun to play with and I'd love to do so again, if I ever wrote for this fandom again which... probably won't happen.
